GET TO KNOW SOMEONE – SLOWLY. Usually, people show only their best qualities in the beginning of new relationship. Given some time, unhealthy people will show their unhealthy side too - it’s only after some time has passed do they let their guards down and then the unhealthy behaviors come rolling out!
HANG OUT IN A GROUP - FIRST. Hanging out and getting to know each other while in a group takes the pressure off! You don’t have to think about where to go, what you two are going to talk about or who is going to pay for the date. If you’re both in the same activity or going to the same event, you could have some of the same interests, and that means you already have something to talk about!
LISTEN - FIRST. People are drawn towards people who really listen to them. As you listen, the other person feels like you are really interested in them – and you are interested in getting to know them, right?!
DISCUSS EXPECTATIONS - EARLY. What is important to you in a friend, boyfriend, and girlfriend or in a relationship? What is important to have in these areas? What don’t you want? Setting up clear expectations early in a relationship makes it easier to find out early on if you are couple-compatible.
TAKE A TECH BREAK - EVERY SO OFTEN. Using technology can make us feel connected to lots of people.You can text your parents your dinner plans, say hi to a friend on Facebook and follow your favorite band on MySpace. These are all good, but healthy relationships can’t grow without spending face-to-face time together.
